Phonics/Reading: Your child should have brought home their first phonics reader titled Hot, Hot, Hot. We practiced reading this book at school. When one of these readers or another book comes home, please take time to read, reread and discuss the book with your child. Your child should put their finger under each word as they read to make sure that their eye is following the print and to make sure that they are looking at each letter in the word. I tell them that good Kindergarten readers always read the words and the pictures as the pictures give important information about the story. Please return the book with your initials on it to let me know that it was read at home. Your support in this area is vital to your child’s progress. If your child seems to be struggling with reading the books, reassure your child that everyone grows at a different pace and that reading will become easier in time. The children have been taught to unblend the words one letter at a time saying each sound slowly at first until the word clicks and makes sense. There are also high frequency words on the bottom of some worksheets. Do a quick review of these words by having your child point to each word as you say the word.

Voyages: All that we have is a gift from God. When we realize this we want to return some of His gifts in order to show our thankfulness.  Moses told the people to bring gifts to God. They brought so many gifts, Moses had to tell the people to stop! We want our hearts to overflow with thankfulness too! We have completed the Ten Commandments.

We will continue to review them throughout the year.

Fire Safety: A practice fire drill, books about fire engines, smoke detectors, emergencies, fire fighters, and the fire station filled our week. We will have a special visitor today. Mr. Dave DeCono and other volunteers from the Clyman department will once again do their excellent presentation for the children. I took many pictures.

Math: We use many manipulatives in our program.  The children have been ordering the numbers 1-10, counting down and blasting off and playing the missing number game with a partner. They are working on using a ruler to draw straight lines on their dot-to-dot papers. We continue to work on writing those “tricky” numbers. I think that 2 and 5 are getting easier. We have been working on matrixes using two shapes at a time. The children need to sort and describe the pieces by shape, color and size.

Thank You Ebert’s: We wrote a thank-you note to Ebert’s Greenhouse Village. We used our predictable chart form. We decorated a poster with our story on it so that Ebert’s can display it.

Book It and McDonald’s: Please record the time and books you read with your child each evening. This is a great way to connect with your child.
