Welcome to School!

March 14, 2008

National Lutheran Schools Week was full of exciting events which included dress-up days, over 450 kids in chapel at Good Shepherd, Jump Rope for Heart/Hoops,  Grandparent’s/Special Person’s Day, and our musical Go Fish.

Go Fish was oceans of fun for the children. The kindergarten did a great job of participating in the musical. They were very excited to share their play and you can see why! A BIG thank you to Angi Kodrich, Deanna Slaybaugh and Jeaunetta Westenberg for extra help.

Ferdinand the Bull was a delightful interactive play we saw on Monday. I love this story as Ferdinand does not want to run and butt heads like the other little bulls. He wants to sit peacefully and smell the flowers. The theme encourages the idea that we need to respect and appreciate the differences that we see in others.

The Poison Prevention program presented on Monday afternoon by Watertown Hospital was informative for the children. An age appropriate video as well as a pharmacist reinforcing the information with a brief activity was interesting to the children. Mr. Yuck is sure to be found in your cupboards and closets.

Xx was our extra special letter this week. The keyword picture was fox. We focused on words that end with the letter x. We continue to write our predictable charts which encourage the children to read and write high frequency (words seen often in print) and sight words. This week we wrote Me and Ferdinand the Bull.

The Lord’s Prayer and Mary Anoints Jesus’ Feet were our bible stories this week. We say the Lord’s Prayer together often.  Through several nice picture books we talked about each of the petitions and how they apply to our lives. In the story with Mary we learn that Jesus forgave her past sins, saw her repentant heart, her demonstration of love from a thankful heart and gave her new life! He does the same for us. How can we thank Him with our lives?

Habitats around the world were part of our science theme this week. We discussed the ocean, desert, mountain, prairie and rain forest briefly. We continue discovering more animals that live in the Atlantic Ocean through Suzanne Tate’s Nature series. The children helped set up a hands-on science table using sea shells and rubber ocean animals. Several asked me if I could take them on a field trip to the ocean. I wish!

As we move into Holy Week take time to worship the Lord with your family.
